The Word of the Year for 2025 could be ‘uncertainty’. Between the FAR, the economy, the politics, the weather, and the global conflicts, there is a general sense of angst about what would/will/could/should/might/may happen. All this uncertainty can be exhausting. The good news is that we’ve weathered uncertainty before. In the last 15 years, we’ve had a global recession, a pandemic, an enormous surge in AI, several epic weather events (yup, two hurricanes hit my house within 2 week of each other last Fall!), a slew of Executive Orders and GovCon changes, and more. My point is not be dig into the gloom. Instead, I want to light a candle and remind us that despite the uncertainty, we are able to keep going forward.
How?
By focus on being able to tell the signal vs the noise. There is a LOT of noise right now that is driving the uncertainty. Do not try to take in all the noise (which is quickly exhausting). Instead, look for the signals in the noise. The signals are the things that, if they did change, would impact you, your office, your agency, your company, your contract, etc. They would impact you. While this may sound selfish and self-centered, that’s because it is self-centered. If we focus on how all the uncertainty affects everyone else, everywhere else, we may miss the signals of how it affects us…and instead we get buried in…are you ahead of me?…the noise.
