As we roll through the 2nd quarter of FY2025, we’re starting to see some of the volatility in GovCon settle down a bit…just a bit though. Some agencies are still in turmoil, the economy as a whole is roiling, and we’re all looking for a clear path ahead. Spoiler alert. There is no “clear” path. Yes, it’s much less clear right now than we’d like, but the path ahead is rarely crystal clear. What is clear is that standing still doesn’t help us. Just because there is a Fog over GovCon does not mean we freeze and wait for it to clear. The fog does mean we slow down a bit, but we do still keep moving.
So, what to do keep moving? Use the 6 Month Rule (we outlined it in Contracting Officer Podcast episode 245).
Look at the list of things we could do right now, then consider what will happen in 6 months if you do them (or don’t do them). Consider what day is 6 months from today. Yup, that’s Oct 30th. That’s in FY26! The end of FY25 will be a very big push – this year especially – given the excessively late budget approval*, the turbulence in GovCon overall with DOGE, the cuts across agencies, budgets and people, and the turmoil in the economy overall (the term “stagflation” finally popped into the news cycle). Given all that, today is a very good day to consider the 6 Month Rule. What can you do TODAY, to be ready for the end of FY 2025? I won’t attempt to answer that question for you since it’s unique to your situation. By just asking it, you’re already thinking ahead. You’re looking beyond the fog of today and mapping out what will matter (and what won’t matter) in 6 months.
